Frequently Asked Questions:
1) Do only certain characters make certain letters?
Just about any character can make any letter. There are endless possibilities!
Certain letters such as, O, S, Q, Z, X sometimes requires that the character to be sitting down. Certain objects such as cars, trains are better suited for letters with horizontal lines - such as E, S, Q, L. If your case is unusual, I'll do my best to find an artistic solution to the character/ letter combination that fits your request. If you aren't sure, let me know what you have in mind and I give you suggestions!
2) Can you do ______________ this character?
Yes I can do about any character you would like! Besides just popular Disney characters and superheroes, I can also do basketball players, ballerinas, animals, dogs, dinosaurs, doctors, fishermen - anything you can think of. It is required that you send me a picture when you place your order on Etsy. It is recommend that you use a "cartoon" version of it for best results. Send the picture to me as a link or message me the picture as an attachment.
3) Did you go to school to learn name painting?
I learned this art form when I worked at Disneyland for 2 years. I received on-the-job training. In addition - I have been taking foundational art classes for about 20 years. I also work as a professional concept artist for theme parks.
4) How do you have such nice handwriting/ calligraphy?
I've taken 2 semesters of calligraphy when I was in college. I had training from a professional calligrapher. It was a LOT of practice.
5) What materials do you use?
The paints are a mixture of Pearlescent tempera by Chromatemp, Fade-Proof Higgens Ink and water. I have to mix and add fresh paint and ink every time I sit down to create a painting. The consistency has to be just perfect. The preparatory process can take up to 30 minutes!
6) What type of paint brush do you use?
The brush is actually not a brush at all. It is actually a piece of aluminum with a piece of leather at the end of it. So can't buy them in stores, so I custom made it myself.
7) This is so creative! How did you come up with this?
This artform is called Leatherbrush, Letterbrush, Letter Art, Name Art or Name painting. It has its roots in Oriental Painting. I believe it originated in the Chinatown of New York. These Chinese artists would paint names using various birds, animals and plants and sold these souvenirs mainly to tourists! You will still see many asian people doing this stuff today – mainly at malls, beaches and county fairs. Many theme parks have added a modern twist to this art form. For example, you can get stuff like this at Disneyland with Disney characters, Legoland with Star Wars characters, and Sea World with sea creatures!
I started to do anime and superhero characters because I wanted to have a Booth at Anime Expo. So I created this business with the sole purpose of being able to go to a Anime Convention. But after I started the business - I realized that this was kind of fun and there is a huge demand for it; so I continue to do it. :)
